If you wait til you get a good freeze, there will be much less greenery to deal with. You will be able to easily pull them away from the soil without cutting.

I just use an old pair of scissors before it frosts.

I have a long row about 50 feet of very hardy ones.
At the end of the season after they have yellowed and started to die back, I simply run the lawn mower right down the row.
The leaves go right into the bagger. No muss, no fuss.

My neighbors have “heirloom” hostas from her husbands grandmother. .
These things are ENOURMOUS. .
We split them twice this summer! We used a regular shovel. . . .
As for cutting them down there’s really no reason. . .
They will just grow back and you can split them next spring. . . .
We split them from the back and got 6-8 plants and you couldn’t see where we split them. . . Really no maintance at all. . .
Good luck
